What Inspired You To Write The Book?
As I covered the team's first season while working on a story for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, I found myself drawn more and more to the stories of the players on the team, many of whom overcame obstacles long before they tried the sport of football. Once I completed the story, it became clear much of that depth would be missed -- even though it was quite a long story. I continued to follow the team during its second, more successful, season and did additional research and conducted more interviews for the project.
What Makes The Book Unique?
Well, first, the team itself was unique -- the first high school football team in the state of Wisconsin to combine a public school and a private school and, of the few like it in the nation, the only to pair a central city school with a suburban one. The book is written in a narrative style. As people read it, I hope it will seem more like a novel than a piece of nonfiction. However, the fact that it is a true story gives it greater depth, as the team learns how to work together, play together and fight as one.
